Course Overview

Introduction to VoIP

Cut through the noise, jargon and hype around VoIP at this intensive session that will get you ready to tackle the challenges evolving your communication network.  You’ll start with a clear explanation of how the legacy circuit switched network operates, and then move quickly to an in-depth overview of protocol building blocks of VoIP (and where some of VoIP’s weaknesses are hidden).  RTP packetization and voice compression are explained.  From there, you’ll discover how VoIP signaling ties both IP and legacy networks together for call routing and messaging.  Upon completion, you will have a rock-solid understanding of Circuit Switching, VoIP architecture, and all of the associated networking principles.

Adapting Legacy Phone Systems to VoIP

Got VoIP?  See how you can leverage your current PBX investment while incorporating VoIP technology.  Gain an in-depth understanding of the important functionality of different VoIP gateways and how they interface with PBXs, analog key systems, and the PSTN.  Learn how to add remote offices and employees, and create VPNs for voice communication without utilizing the traditional PSTN.  Find out when a Softswitch/SIP Proxy is needed and see examples of call routing with and without Softswitch/SIP Proxies.  Plus find out when a VoIP carrier is a must and when you can go it alone.

VoIP System Architecture - "The evolution to IMS"

See how monolithic circuit switching systems evolved into SS7/AIN-based network elements, and further into Softswitches, gateways, IP Media Servers, and Session Border Controllers.  Evolution of Softswitches to IMS architecture is detailed including the CSCFs, HSS, MGCF/MGW, SGW, BGCF, etc.  The functionality of the "Call State Machine" is illustrated throughout the evolution process.

IP Media, and HMP Technology vs. DSP Technology

IP Media Servers, Faxes, and Modems - The problems with RTP packetization, and transmission of Faxes and Modems over the IP network.  Passthrough vs. T.38 is explained in detail.   ·  Host Media Processing vs. the use of Digital Signal Processors.   ·  Understanding the roles and limitations of each type of technology is key in architecting, deploying, and debugging everything from a single IP PBX or Media Server or an entire network of IMS elements.

VoIP Control Protocols: H.323, SIP and IAX

Details of the protocol messaging, the pros-and-cons of deploying solutions with each signaling type, and how these Peer-to-Peer protocols are used in the modern "Call State Machines".  The Session Description Protocol (SDP) is also introduced here in conjunction with SIP methods and addressing.  Call flows of each protocol are covered.

VoIP Lab Sessions

Lab sessions allow the students to create their own interconnected Asterisk PBX systems introducing the students to SIP communication with VoIP Gateways and softphones. ·  Use network-tracing tools to analyze call flows and solve real VoIP network problems. ·  An optional VoIP lab session can be offered to illustrate MGCP Master-Slave protocol control.

VoIP Control Protocols: MGCP, H.248/MEGACO and SIGTRAN

Learn the details of the protocol messaging including the use of SDP.  The pros-and-cons of deploying solutions with each signaling type.  Discussion around how these "Master-Slave" and legacy SS7 over IP protocols are quickly being phased out of even the latest IMS architecture offerings.  Call flows of each protocol are covered.

VoIP Security and Border Controller Functionality

Learn the functionality of Session Border Controller relating to Deep Packet Inspection, Virtual Proxies, Virtual Routing Domains, Firewall/NAT traversal functionality, P-CSCF roles, Class-4 equivalency.  See the functionality of the Security Gateway in a Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) network.

IMS Architecture - "Myths and Reality"

Learn the evolution of communication systems from TDM switching through AIN and on to the latest IMS network architecture.  Understand the similarities and common concepts that have evolved into IMS, as well as, what pieces of the IMS architecture are actually being developed vs. what is hype by the equipment manufacturers.

Real-Life VoIP Deployment Problems

Is your network ready for VoIP?   Dive deep into the real-world problems encountered while deploying and testing VoIP systems in various scenarios. Examine actual case studies from OEMs, Softswitch Partners, VARs, and large carriers during VoIP Network rollouts. Learn how to isolate VoIP and PSTN Network issues and gain solutions to other common problems. Explore the VoIP myths and find out what's true and what's not. Take home expert configuration tips, a full list of recommendations for VoIP Network engineering, and much more.
